The Boston Blue Button Innovation Challenge, co-hosted by Tufts University MedStart and MIT H@cking Medicine, in collaboration with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and the White House Innovation Fellows, got off to a great start with two keynote speakers, Dr. John Halamka and Dr. Catherine Rose.
John D. Halamka, MD, MS, is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Chairman of the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), co-Chair of the national HIT Standards Committee, co-Chair of the Massachusetts HIT Advisory Committee and a practicing Emergency Physician. He opened the event on Friday night as the keynote speaker, talking about how information technology is very different in medicine than in other industries. Medicine is a life and death situation, and technology has to have many safeguards to prevent failure and interrupting clinical activity.
Dr. Halamka, also blogger at http://geekdoctor.blogspot.com/, Life as a Healthcare CIO, talked with MedTech Boston. He feels that “2014 is a unique moment in history for innovation. The data standards of meaningful stage 2 empower interoperability and novel applications. Healthcare reform is re-aligning incentives so that providers focus on continuous wellness instead of episodic sickness. Patient and family engagement is at the center of innovation. There has never been a more exciting time in healthcare.”
Dr. Catherine Rose took the stage as the keynote after Dr. Halamka. Dr. Rose brought a humanistic perspective to the event, talking about her daughter, who has had medical difficulties since birth, and much of her daughter’s early life was spent in the ICU. She emphasized the importance of taking life experiences, learning from that, and doing things to create change. As a mechanical engineer, she was inspired to work on a new product, LightAide, to enhance her daughter’s ability to interact with the world given her visual impairments.
The evening concluded with mingling and the beginning of teams during dinner.
