Looking Back and Moving Forward: 2014’s Health Care Disappointments Drive 2015’s Trends

Disappointments of 2014: “2014 was the first full year under which Americans could access healthcare through insurance plans purchased on health insurance exchanges. Unfortunately, the IT infrastructure supporting such exchanges again wasn’t up to snuff, and lots of last-minute adjustments and tinkering was needed in order to allow people to use the exchanges. What is frustrating is that basic things, such as a rich ability to compare plans and the ability to save work which are taken for granted in other ecommerce platforms are not widely available on the exchanges, meaning more work is needed before we have a truly high-performance health insurance exchange system.”

Trends to watch in 2015: “In 2015, we’ll see increased consolidation in industries. Companies such as Siemens, Cerner, Cognizant, Trizetto and others are all restructuring their corporate organizations to better capture network effects. I also think 2015 is the year of wearables. The Apple Watch made a large splash in 2014, and multiple startups took advantage of rapidly-improving semiconductor and communication technology to make the quantified self a reality. 2015 will inevitably bring even more spectacular innovations that will improve health and wellness on the consumer side and provision of care on the provider side.”
