“I remember one afternoon in 2013 when four of my primary care patients arrived, and were subsequently diagnosed with osteoarthritis. One patient’s story particularly stuck with me: the man had lost his job in construction the week prior because of his knee pain – he simply couldn’t keep up with the healthy 20 year olds. Subsequently, he became depressed and homeless; the cascading of medical problems ensued by osteoarthritis. I left the clinic that evening determined to develop new treatments.” Cocoon Biotech was born.
Cocoon’s mission is to harness nature to transform triumphs. CEO Ailis Tweed-Kent, MD, believes that healthcare is shifting towards preventative medicine and home care, meaning that healthcare will be decentralized as clinics and pharmacies allow for holistic at-home care.
“It’s important to find your ‘yes’ in others’ ‘no,” Tweed-Kent says of the drive behind her successes. “As a child, I wanted to be an altar server at my church, but was told no because I was a girl. I proceeded to write a letter to the bishop articulating the unfairness; eventually girls were allowed to be altar servers, too.”
