Verhelle recently moved to Boston to join Third Rock Ventures as a strategic advisor. Her focus is in developing innovative therapies that are both efficacious and lower in toxicity. “It’s not about incremental improvement in an already developed therapy,” added Verhelle. “It’s about a new therapy with a high potential of improving lives of patients.” She’s now leveraging her past in oncology epigenetic treatment to develop therapies in unmet rare genetic diseases.
Verhelle had a clear long-term vision in mind—join a venture firm and create companies. To get there she spent her former years getting a PhD and MBA and working for pharma giants like Pfizer and Celgene.
In spite of so many professional accolades, Verhelle believes true achievement is in making significant difference for patients. “When I moved to San Diego from France, I brought three paintings of a little guy climbing a ladder,” noted Verhelle. “Each time I reach the top of the ladder, I find myself in a new position and getting back in the middle of the ladder.”
