PULSE@MassChallenge’s 2017 Startup Cohort Innovating Telehealth, Biosensors, Virtual Reality, and More

pulse1MassChallenge,  a leading Boston-based  technology accelerator, has announced the 31 teams joining PULSE@MassChallenge’s inaugural digital health startup cohort. Over the next 6 months, they’ll work out of the group’s innovation lab and be nurtured by an ecosystem of local advisors. They’ll compete for more than $100,000 in zero-equity awards at the program’s culmination.

The first-ever cohort was selected from more than 430 applicants by a pool of institutions, corporations, payers, health systems, and other healthcare partners looking to form unique relationships with up and coming digital health startups. Startups from Massachusetts dominated the final list but over 30 states and 20 countries were initially represented amongst applicants.

PULSE@MassChallenge’s over 30 partners range from  local health leaders like Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Philips Healthcare  to less expected players like AARP, Bose, Microsoft, and Analog Devices.  These partners have all committed to supporting the group of entrepreneurs by facilitating key advisor introductions, pilots, customer connections, research, and even investment opportunities.

“Massachusetts has become a global epicenter for healthcare innovation and we’re so excited to welcome entrepreneurs from all around the world to our program beginning in January. Through active collaboration with leading healthcare organizations and innovation experts, we can establish Boston as a digital health hub and help the most promising startups create impact in the space, ” said Nick Dougherty, Program Director, PULSE@MassChallenge.

picture12Liz Asai and the team at 3Derm exemplify the spirit of innovation about which Dougherty speaks.

While still at Yale studying biomedical engineering, she and a co-founder sought to bring the world a handheld skin imager that could send clinical quality 3D images from a doctor’s office to a trained dermatologist.

Worrisome moles and blemishes that might have gone unchecked — dermatologists often have 3+ month scheduling backlogs — can now be checked out in days. When fighting skin cancer, days and weeks matter.

Asai notes, “We’re thrilled to be recognized in the inaugural PULSE@MassChallenge cohort and to make connections with such innovative companies and institutions. We’re also excited for this opportunity to make teledermatology more widely available across our country.”

Launched as part of Massachusetts statewide Digital Health Initiative, picture11PULSE@MassChallenge works with key players from across the region’s leading healthcare ecosystem to help provide promising startups like 3Derm with the strategic relationships, resources, mentorship, and community access needed to create an impact in digital health — all for zero equity.

“We have all the elements here in Massachusetts to be a leader in the [digital healthcare] space,” said Governor Charlie Baker at the summer 2016 opening of the PULSE@MassChallenge lab.
