The 2017 MedTech Boston 40 Under 40 Healthcare Innovators

30. Pooja Kumar, MD MSc
Partner, McKinsey & Company

Pooja Kumar, MD MScAfter working in the field of refugee health during college, Pooja Kumar enrolled in Harvard Medical School. Little did she know that she would eventually switch into the business-end of the health industry — and that she’d one day make partner at McKinsey & Company.

“My time at medical school solidified healthcare as the space I wanted to be in, and though I eventually shifted from the clinical path to the business side of healthcare, this space continues to be my passion,” Kumar explained.

While in medical school, Kumar stepped into the business field when her brother, an analyst at McKinsey, encouraged her to take an internship there. “I hadn’t even heard of consulting before he started doing it. He was convinced I’d like it, and I guess he was right!”

As a partner at McKinsey, Kumar finds making a difference rewarding. For example, she enjoys implementing programs that will decrease healthcare costs. She also likes to watch her team members grow into managers and partners.

Outside of the office, she tries to “keep up” with her infant daughter and “senior” dog. She also enjoys reading works of fiction and photography.
