The 2017 MedTech Boston 40 Under 40 Healthcare Innovators

3. Alexander Ding, MD, MS
Partner, California Advanced Imaging; Health Technology Adviser

Alexander Ding began his career in finance and business at Goldman Sachs and The Economist, but he couldn’t shake a longstanding interest in medicine. He had always been drawn to its ability to help people at critical times in their lives.

Leaving his finance career behind, Ding concurrently attended medical school and public health school. Ding believes in the importance of caring for people as individuals, as well as within the context of their communities. He says his training at Mass General Hospital during residency and fellowship truly instilled in him the importance of physician leadership both in and out of the clinic.

Now, Ding is on clinical faculty at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, and a Partner at California Advanced Imaging. As a practicing diagnostic and interventional radiologist, he specializes in minimally invasive targeted tumor treatments. Says Ding, “my day-to-day clinical work is very fulfilling; I use technology to diagnose medical illness and use the same technology to perform minimally-invasive image-guided procedures, including precision treatment of tumors.”

Ding lives in Silicon Valley, where he engages with technology companies as a health technology adviser, including Google, Doximity, and Eko. He draws on his clinical expertise and past business experiences to help companies understand their true value at the clinical level.

Ding is a former AMA trustee and remains a member of the AMA Council on Science and Public Health. When he’s not working, he enjoys traveling and experiencing new cultures and cuisines with his family.
